Walt Whitman High School November 2019

On November 15, 2019 Kelly Garton, an AP Biology and AP Environmental Science teacher held an event at Walt Whitman High School.  He worked with Bob Erdman from EVADC ( Electric Vehicle Association of greater Washington DC) to get the electric vehicles for the event.

The event took place from 11am – 1 pm during lunch near the front of the school.  Having the event during lunch allowed the event to happen without using any class time.  It also gave the students a fun activity to participate in during lunch.

Before the event, a flyer that listed the EV owners and their experience was shared for distribution to teachers and students. The purpose of the flyer was to generate student interest for asking questions about both the EVs and the EV owner’s experiences. Many of the EV owners have driven over 50,000 electric miles, and a few have driven across the country.

About 200 students came out to look at the EVs and ask questions. Some of them were sent from AP Environmental Science and AP Biology classes with questions from a short EV Capture Sheet .  Other students came as well to look and ask questions.

The EVADC Vehicle Information Sheet:  EVInfoSheet  and 10 Common EV Myths  were available to the students.  About 5-10% of the students took a flyer with them.

Announcement made in the morning to invite students to come out to see the EVs: “Do you like cool cars?  Do you like clean air?  The two can be related!  Come today during both lunches to check out the latest electric cars in the bus lane!  Tesla, Leaf, Bolt and more!!!  Students and staff welcome!”
