August 2010 MeetingEVA/DC's August meeting will be held this Wednesday, 08/18 at 7 pm at White Oak Library Why Wednesday night instead of our regular third Tuesday? Because Montgomery County has shortened its library hours to meet budget requirements. But they have later hours on Wednesdays and will allow us to maintain our 7-9:30 schedule. We have looked around, but we have yet to find another location with the same hours, convenience, size, affordability, peace and quiet, free parking with room to congregate, inspect and sometime test drive EVs, and the freedom to bring in our own pizza and refreshments. But we must reserve our rooms well in advance, before another organization grabs them. So we have arranged to have the next three meetings (Sept., Oct., Nov.) at Chevy Chase Library. But we remain open to other meeting room suggestions. Wednesday Night Agenda: RACING & RALLYING: For the first time EVer in the US, Virginia International Raceway hosted international EV motorcycle racing this past weekend, and our own John Alder was there. He will report on the TTXGP. A Tesla factory representative is performing a solo international run and is approaching DC. Shall we party?! On Sunday, Aug. 15th, Swiss Solar star Louis Palmer inaugurated his latest around-the-globe carbon-free tour with four solar teams, and will eventually reach Washington. Charlie will have the latest word. Can a 400 hp EV supercar go "PanAmerican" and make it from Alaska to the southern tip of Chile? www.racinggreenendurance.com Our own super Charlie Garlow is still racing against the clock to complete his Solar Li-Ion BugE project in time to get off some runs this year. The battery pack is coming along nicely, but costs continue to rise. See www.FunRunintheSun.com and please consider sponsoring or making a donation. Video: Solar Katrina - Magnetic Storm?: Could a giant solar flare reoccur and knock out power transformers over most of globe – possibly for months with terrible consequences? This is the scenario that has everyone – including members of Congress – buzzing. Some say it could happen in 2012. Yet it may be preventable . . . Please don't prevent yourself from enjoying Papa John's pizza, refreshments, light humor and camaraderie this Wednesday, August 18th, 7 pm at White Oak Library. Regards, Dave Goldstein, EVA/DC President |
